School Improvement & Snapshot Review
To develop a strategic and improvement plan it is essential for schools and leadership teams to have a complete picture of their current strengths and areas for development. I have the experience and tools to provide clarity for leaders on what is, and where to next, and provide a snapshot review report aligned to school systems and processes to allow for strategic planning and school improvement.
The basis of my work as a school improvement consultant is a relationship based on trust and collaboration to provide clarity on what each individual school needs to take the next steps on its improvement journey. The underpinning focus for any school is ultimately improving learning outcomes for students.
As an independent External School Reviewer, I work alongside schools to provide clear, evidence-based insights that support sustainable improvement in teaching, learning and leadership. My reviews are designed to be both rigorous and practical, giving school leaders and staff a genuine understanding of what is working well, where challenges exist, and what the next strategic steps should be. I bring an objective, experienced lens to each school, ensuring that feedback is constructive, balanced and focused on improving outcomes for students.
Schools that engage in a Snapshot Review benefit from a clear, unbiased perspective and actionable recommendations. I provide:
- Honest, balanced feedback on strengths and areas for development.
- Clear links between practice, data & outcomes.
- Practical next steps that can be embedded into school improvement planning.
- A shared understanding among staff of current practice and future direction.
Importantly, this is not a formal system-style review. The process is deliberately collaborative, flexible and tailored to your context. It is built around professional conversations with school leaders and staff, alongside the thoughtful use of school data, documentation, and classroom practice. These conversations are central to the process and ensure the outcomes are not generic, but genuinely tailored to the unique needs, strengths, and aspirations of your school and its leadership team.
What it looks like in practice:
A short, focused engagement designed to fit around the real work of a school.

- Conversations with key leaders and staff.

- Classroom visits where appropriate.
- Ongoing dialogue focused on understanding current practice and identifying next steps.
A strong emphasis on collaboration, trust, and practical improvement — not compliance or judgement.

- Classroom visits as appropriate.
- Synthesis of findings into clear Strengths, Observations, and Possible next steps.

Typically, 2-3 days total depending on school size and scope. Can be:
- Two days on site (or online).
- Preparation, analysis, and writing time.
- Designed to be quick, focused, with little disruption.
- Timing and scope are flexible and negotiated to suit your school’s context and calendar.
What you receive:

- Strengths to build on.
- Observations – What is happening now.
- Possible next steps for improvement.
A strong foundation for:
- Your next Strategic Plan.
- Your Annual Implementation Plan.
- Leadership team strategic planning.
- A shared, evidence-informed picture that supports clarity, focus, and next steps.
I believe that effective school improvement is built on trust, professional respect and high expectations. Reviews should strengthen, not undermine, staff confidence and morale. I am committed to working in a way that recognises the professionalism of teachers and leaders, values the voice of the school community, and keeps student learning and wellbeing at the centre of every conversation. My work is grounded in evidence-based practice, reflective leadership and a strong belief in continuous improvement.
If your school is seeking an experienced, independent reviewer who understands both the complexity of school leadership and the practical realities of classrooms, I would welcome the opportunity to work with you. Whether you are preparing for your next strategic plan, seeking an objective perspective, or wanting to strengthen your improvement planning, I can provide tailored support to meet your needs.
Get in Touch …Mentoring & Instructional Coach
“Having authority may give you a title, but it’s trust that makes you a leader.” Simon Sinek
Effective school leadership requires more than technical expertise — it demands reflection, adaptability, and the capacity to lead people through complexity and change. My mentoring and professional partnering services are designed to support school leaders at all stages of their leadership journey, providing a trusted, experienced sounding board to help clarify thinking, strengthen practice, and build confidence in decision-making.
Members of school leadership teams are often at different stages in their strategic development. Every person brings a unique set of experiences, strengths, levels of capability and varying degrees of confidence, capacity and intent. As such, building leadership capability requires a personalised and differentiated approach.
As part of the mentoring, critical friend conversations are developed collaboratively with each individual and are designed to support the growth of their strategic leadership capacity. These conversations may range from informal professional dialogue and idea-testing, through to more structured coaching or seeking an external perspective on complex situations they are navigating.
Through structured yet flexible mentoring conversations, leaders are supported to reflect on their practice, identify areas for growth, and develop practical strategies aligned with their goals and school priorities. Key focus areas will vary depending on need, but often include strategic leadership, emotional intelligence, and communication and collaboration.
Professional Learning Provider
Professional partnering goes beyond traditional mentoring by offering an external, objective perspective grounded in deep experience in school leadership and improvement. Acting as a critical friend, I work alongside leaders to explore complex issues, test ideas, and navigate challenges in a safe and confidential space. This may include support with strategic planning, leading change, strengthening team effectiveness, managing difficult conversations, or building a culture of trust and accountability.
A key feature of this work is the use of evidence-informed coaching approaches that support leaders to translate insight into action. Over time, leaders may undertake a focused improvement project aligned to their role and school priorities, allowing them to apply learning in authentic contexts while developing their leadership capability in a purposeful and sustainable way.
Mentoring has an impact – a ripple effect that extends beyond the individual to benefit staff and improve student outcomes. Its purpose is to build capacity and empower leaders to foster a positive, collaborative school culture.
Above all, my approach is practical, relational, and grounded in real-world school leadership experience. The aim is not simply to provide advice, but to build leadership capacity — enabling leaders to grow in confidence, clarity, and effectiveness, and to lead their schools with purpose, resilience, and impact. Sessions are normally delivered online, at a time that suits you, and is flexible for busy leaders seeking individual and tailored input.
Strategic Documentation Support
Strong planning documents should support improvement, not create extra workload or sit on a shelf. I work alongside principals and leadership teams to clarify, refine, and strengthen the key strategic documents schools are expected to produce each year.
This includes practical, hands-on support with:
- Strategic Plans, Annual Implementation Plans, and related planning documents.
- Clarifying language, sharpening priorities, and strengthening alignment.
- Ensuring documents are clear, coherent, and genuinely useful as working school documents.
- Reducing workload and pressure by providing practical support with drafting and refinement.
The focus is on reducing workload and pressure while improving the quality and usefulness of your documentation. This is a collaborative process that respects your context and builds on your school’s work, helping you tell your improvement story clearly, credibly, and in a way that supports real work in classrooms and across the school.
This support is practical, collaborative, and grounded in the realities of school life. The focus is on helping you say what matters, align what you do, and use your documents as real working tools for improvement — not just compliance requirements.
